Are you a Natural Beauty?

Timeless Classics found right in the ingredients in your Kitchen.

Are you a natural beauty? No seriously – are you?

We have been told over the years that having your natural hair colour is a ‘natural beauty’ or wearing little to no make-up is a ‘natural beauty’ but no-one ever says that by just using natural products made using natural ingredients make you a genuine natural beauty.

Last Thursday we held an event at our Arganic HQ at Second Home to celebrate Organic Beauty Week with the Soil Association.

We delved into Green & Blacks vegan sea salt chocolate, sipped on Pukka Love teas and crafted natural body scrubs using just 4 ingredients: Sea Salt, Cacao Nibs, Argan Oil and a Scent (Fresh Rosemary, Fresh Lemon, Rose Water or Vanilla)

The space was alive with excitement…as we walked around the room the team started to hear stories from different guests about the timeless skincare advice that had been handed down through their families.

What was more impressive was that these beauty secrets being shared could all be found in our very own kitchens.

These women were listening to their Mothers, Grandmothers and Great Grandmother’s who didn’t have access to the media bombardment of the ‘next new thing’ that will turn time back to your pre-adolescent skin.

These were tried and tested products that have been working for centuries!

Here at Arganic we don’t believe in fads; We believe in heritage and results.

Here are some of the Natural Beauty Skincare products which you can make right from your very kitchen.

#Chocolate and Argan Scrub

We are sharing with you the recipe from the event in order that you can make your very own scrub at home

For the base:
Grind the sea salt and cacao nibs. Mix 1.5 tbsp cacao nibs and 3 tbsp sea salt. Add Argan Oil to make a paste. Add the scent you wish to use (our recommended measure see below), transfer paste to glass pot and top with 0.5cm of Argan oil.

Scent: Vanilla ½ tsp, Rosemary ½, tsp Lemon ½ tsp and Rose Water – 1 tsp

  • Exfoliating with sea salt helps remove dead skin cells.
  • Layers of dead skin cells can make the skin look dry and flaky; exfoliation with a sea salt scrub reveals the moist, shiny skin hidden underneath.
  • Sea salt scrubs invigorate the skin and help to improve circulation which will give skin its natural glow.
  • Scrubbing with sea salt also helps to remove bacteria from the skin and unclog pores.
  • Cacao is full of rich antioxidants and caffeine and also helps create a brownie scented scrub to invigorate the senses.
  • Argan oil moisturises your skin leaving your body supple and soft for more youthful looking skin.
    • Rosemary – antibacterial and antioxidant
    • Rose Water – cleanses and reduces pores
    • Lemon – antibacterial and anti-inflammatory
    • Vanilla – antioxidant and anti-inflammatory

In our scrubs we used Ndali Vanilla. Ndali not only smells insane but their vanilla is fair trade and certified organic. Read more about Ndali story here.

One of our founders favourite home made masks is a Manuka Honey Mask.

On a cleansed face apply a thin layer of honey and lie back for 15 minutes and let the mask work wonders. (it doesn’t matter if a little gets on your lips…it tastes delicious)
One of the reasons Dana loves Manuka honey is because it is naturally grainy which acts as a gentle exfoliator

  • Honey helps cleanse the face. It pulls the impurities out from the pores of the skin, reducing the size and leaving an even skin tone.
  • Honey has antibacterial properties which is amazing at treating spots and acne.
  • Honey helps retain moisture perfect for a weekly mask to help your skin feel radiant, supple and soft.
  • Honey is great at preventing wrinkles which in the long run will help your skin stay young.

Our favourite Seresin Estate Wild Manuka Honey can be bought online or in-store from The Modern Pantry

# Rose Water and Green Tea Toner

Another wonderful addition was this homemade toner to use daily

Boil a kettle and brew some green tea. Once steeped for 5 minutes – remove – and chill in the fridge. Once chilled add a few drops of rose water in an airtight bottle and leave chilled in the fridge.

This simple toner applied with a cotton pad works wonders. After you have cleansed your face sweep gently to remove any leftover make-up and gently tone the skin.

  • Rose water has anti-inflammatory properties that can help reduce the redness of irritated skin and is brilliant for acne and eczema.
  • Rose water is a great cleanser and aids in removing oil and dirt accumulated in clogged pores.
  • Green tea helps close pores.

Skin is revitalised and ready for a few drops of Argan oil to moisturise.

#Cold Showers

Kay Duffy has shared her favourite natural and cost effective tips with us: Cold Showers

Enter Shower: Cold Tap

  • Cold Showers help improve circulation which is important to leaving your skin looking smooth and youthful.
  • Cold Showers leave you feeling extra clean and revived (particularly relevant when living in a metropolitan area)
  • Cold Showers have been shown to relieve depression symptoms due to the intense impact of cold receptors in the skin, which send electrical impulses from the peripheral nerve-endings to the brain. Thus boosts mood, making it a sustainable, natural pick-me-up !

Cold Showers have also been linked to keeping your pores closed and boosting shine on hair whereas hot showers can dry you up and leave your pores open to fill up with dirt and grime.

Homemade Body Scrub

#Anti-Cellulite Scrub

Cyntra homemade coffee scrub not only wakes you up but helps in those stubborn areas

1 cup of coarse brown sugar
1/2 cup of coconut oil
2 tbsp. ground coffee

How to make it:
Mix all the ingredients together well and store in an airtight jar. This should last up to a couple of months outside of the fridge.
To use, massage around 2tbsp of mix onto wet skin on the buttocks and thighs.

  • Coffee can spike circulation and temporarily shrinks fat cells
  • Caffeine can tightens and provides antioxidants to the skin when applied topically

Exfoliating is great for circulation which can help shift pesky fat cells

The Soil Association Beauty have been working hard on their campaign #lookforthelogo to help consumers pick natural beauty products by finding the soil association logo on them. Read more about their campaign on their site and remember to check those ingredients!

We are proud to have the logo!

5 Tips To Get Big and Beautiful Hair

5 Tips to Get Big and Beautiful Hair with Argan Oil

Many of you may have heard the term ‘Moroccan Oil’ and wondered what on Earth is that? Well the term coined ‘Moroccan Oil’ is referring to an ancient oil known as Argan oil.

It comes from the fruit of the native Argan tree in Morocco, which is where the term ‘Moroccan Oil’ got its famous name.

You may be wondering where this oil comes from. It is made from seeds inside of the Argan fruit. We collect those seeds and we cold-press them to get a highly nutritious oil of the highest quality.

What makes the oil so beneficial is that:

  • It’s rich with vitamins A, C and E, as well as being loaded with antioxidants.
  • It can help boost cell production which results in healthier skin and hair
  • With just a couple of drops your skin and hair will be transformed.

Charlize Theron claims ‘the oil rescued her hair when she used it as a conditioner after too much dye caused it to split and break…’

Purity Matters

Many Argan Oils or Moroccan Oils on the market are not fully the real thing – quite often they are filled with a mixture oils or other chemicals.

When you have high quality single origin cold pressed Argan Oil you will notice the difference! We are so proud of our oil we are the only UK company to put our partner farm Sidi Yassine on our bottles!

Always check the ingredient list. It should have just one ingredient: 100% Argan Oil (Argania Spinosa) Kernel Oil.

Our Beauty Oil is 100% pure which means its full of all the essential nutrients that will benefit your hair with no greasy residue! We are so proud of its purity we even put our Moroccan partner farm on the bottle Sidi Yassine.

Straighteners and hairdryers and a staple for all of us but can take their toll on our hair. Before using any styling tools, apply 2 to 3 drops of Argan oil using your hand, palm first.

Then use a brush or comb to distribute it evenly throughout your hair from roots to tips which coats it with the oil, keeping it protected from heat damage.

Use your tools as usual and reap the benefits of having big and beautiful without the long term damage.

Many people, both men, and women suffer from hair loss. Argan oil is an excellent oil for stopping hair loss and even helping to promote new growth by treating the scalp three times a week.

Place a few drops of the oil onto your fingertips and massage it into your scalp.

Eid al-Adha

We at Arganic love to share and feast together and today we want to share with you these delicious date and cardamon cookies created by our friend Iraqi Chef Philip Juma of the Juma Kitchen. Our founder Dana is from Iraqi descent and her face lights up with memories and joy just from the very thought of these cookies.

These cookies, also know as Kleicha, are perfect for sharing with those around you and Philip suggests best enjoyed with a nice cup of tea. Philip was kind enough to share his delicious recipe with us and what kind of friend would we be to keep this all to ourselves.

Ingredients: (makes 40)

600g plain ‘OO’ grade flour
200g melted butter
1 tbsp dry yeast
1 tbsp sugar
½ tbsp salt
5 tbsp water
2 tbsp nigella seeds
600g packet of date paste (can be found in most Middle Eastern supermarkets)
3 tbsp sunflower oil
1 tbsp cardamon
2 large sandwich bags (cut open)
1 egg

Method: (Evening Standard Magazine – Philip Juma)

For the pastry

Begin by making the pastry. In a food mixer, add the flour, melted butter, yeast, and sugar. Next add the salt, but please ensure you place the salt as far away from the yeast, as they cancel each other out.

On a low setting, mix the ingredients together. You are looking for a pizza dough-like texture. Add water gradually and if you feel the mix needs more, then add. When you feel it is close, add the nigella seeds.

Once blended, push the dough with your hand, there should be a spring in the dough and it should feel moist.

Place in a bowl and cover with a towel – leave to rest for 40 minutes to allow the yeast activate.

For the date mix

While the pastry is resting, start on the date mix.

Begin by heating a large saucepan with the sunflower oil. Add the date mixture. It will seem hard at first, however, as the pan heats up, the date mix should begin to soften. Add the cardamom powder.

Keep stirring and folding it. You are looking for a soft texture that can be easily rolled.

After the pastry has risen, separate it into four pieces.

On a floured surface roll the pastry out into a rectangle shape. You are looking for the longest part to be vertical and the shortest, horizontal to you.

Separately, take your sandwich bag and place a ball of date paste (size of a small apple) on top, and then place another sandwich bag on top of the date. Roll the date paste out to a similar shape of the rectangular pastry, it should be easy to shape/mould.

Peel away the top layer and place the dates on top of the pastry. Remove all of the plastic from the dates. Any gaps on the pastry, you can just fill it in with extra date paste.

Next, shape your cookies. Begin from the vertical side and roll from right to left. You are looking for a tight roll. Start from the top and work your way down.

Take your rolled pastry and cut the Kleicha as you see fit. Traditionally, 2-3 inches in size.

Brush with beaten egg and bake in the oven for 20 minutes at 180°C. You are looking for a golden colour and the smells should be wonderful.

Eid al-adha

Repeat for the other three batches.

Symmetry Breakfast, M’smmen using Arganic

Symmetry Breakfast

First and foremost we want to say a huge congratulations to our friends Michael and Mark at Symmetry Breakfast. This year they launched their first book Cook-Love-Share to bring breakfast to life in kitchens all around the world.

If you haven’t heard about this visionary concept already get ready to have your breakfast revolutionised.

Symmetry Breakfast was born when Michael’s partner Mark moved in with him. After rearranging their apartment and gaining a new dining table (the table seen in the photos) Symmetry Breakfast came to life. With a Chinese and Scottish background – Michael grew up with a different concept to what is considered ‘normal’ and harnessed this to develop one of instagrams best loved pages. Learning and discovering the traditions of where food comes from inspired him to create a new breakfast every single morning with no repeats.

Both on a personal and professional level we at Arganic love Symmetry Breakfast and the incredible author behind it. Congratulations Michael.

(p.s. Symmetry Breakfast are also fans of Arganic and use our Culinary Oil in their wonderful M’smmen – click here for the recipe)
